A Memo on Diabetic Shoes

Common problems with diabetes is for the extremities, notably the hands and feet, of the body to be extra- sensitive to cuts and bruising. This is a side-affect of the disease which can impede normal circulation of blood, which in turn, means that the feet can by starved of oxygen, nutrients and even white blood cells.

This means that the feet of a diabetic are often susceptible to cuts and bruising and take a longer time to heal than non-diabetics. It is important that the feet are examined and given special care.

Diabetic shoes are an incredibly important in helping to prevent foot problems related to diabetes. At one time, there was little thought given to how specially crafted shoes could help a diabetics feet but, nowadays, diabetic shoes are fairly easy to acquire. However, not everyone understands the benefits of diabetic shoes and how they can improve the condition of the feet.

The principal behind the diabetic shoes is not dis-similar to the ordinary shoe. The shoe should fit comfortably but leave enough room for the foot the 'breath'. Diabetic shoes should be made of natural materials. This combination should allow good ventilation which will reduce the chance of sweat becoming trapped in the shoe and around the foot. Sweat encourages dirt and bacteria to the feet and hence infections. Thus diabetic shoes should act to prevent infections occurring.

The shoes should be seamless and light weight so as to avoid irritating existing problems with the feet. As with ordinary shoes they should have a strong and supportive arch to ensure that the foot is balanced  and unnecessary strains aren't placed on it when walking. A strong toe-cap is important to protect the sensitive toes from any external shocks.

Diabetic shoes are available by prescription only and a doctor must examine the feet and make a  decision as to what type of shoes the patient is best suited to. Be sure to get your feet exmined the next time you see your doctor or brief the doctor on any concerns you have about your feet.

Keep in mind that diabetic shoes are worn for the specific purpose of avoiding foot related problems and must be worn at any time weight is placed on the foot. Any and every time! If one is to avoid ulcerations and infections, one must take care and prevention against any situation that may cause them.
Although diabetic shoes can significantly improve the condition of the feet it is important that regular and thorough care of the feet is taken. It is advised to wash your feet thoroughly with soap and tepid water everyday and always keep toenails well trimmed.
